A Toast to John B. Keane

Irish playwright, poet, and pub owner John Brendan Keane (21 July 1928 – 30 May 2002) expressed his love for drink with a wit and passion few could match. On the anniversary of his passing, let’s lend an ear to his words once more — then promptly raise a glass, as he surely would’ve insisted.

If You Need a Laugh on Monday

"Kirkland Light! Available in 48 packs where you buy your pants!"

Randy Colpek loves his Kirkland Light beer from Costco.
Budweiser has its Clydesdales, Corona has its beaches, and Dos Equis has its Most Interesting Man Alive. But Kirkland Light Beer, Costco's very own house brew, has Randy Colpek. And Randy Colpek is a beer-drinking force to be reckoned with.

By his estimate, Randy Colpek drinks 18 cans of Kirkland Light Beer a day, five days a week. Last time he tried to haul his cans of Kirkland Light Beer to the recycling center, he exceeded the 100-pound limit. He is—and I'm not sure this phrase has never been used before—a diehard Kirkland Light Beer fan boy.
Warning: Language.

I've Got Some Catching Up To Do

I often get asked questions about how much beer I drink. Some people think that since I'm public about my appreciation for good beer, I must drink a lot. It's about quality folks, not quantity. The Boulder County, Colorado government, in a part of the country that is no stranger to craft breweries, has a "Drinking Limits for Health" guide on their web site.
In Boulder County, more than 15 percent of residents regularly exceed the recommended alcohol limits. Drinking limits to maintain health (low-risk drinking limits) are:
  • Women: No more than 3 drinks on any day, and no more than 7 drinks in a week.
  • Men: No more than 4 drinks on any day, and no more than 14 drinks in a week.
To stay low risk, keep within both the daily and weekly limits. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant, or who are breastfeeding should not drink. Both men and women over the age of 65 should have no more than 3 drinks on any day and no more than 7 per week.
Wow! I don't even get close to hitting either of those thresholds. I might even not be drinking enough to stay healthy. I'm going to have to reevaluate.

The web page also has a quiz you can take to check your own drinking levels.

Beer & Kidney Stones

Don't fret. The news is good. A study of 195,094 people over an eight year period has shown that what you drink may be more beneficial in preventing kidney stones than how much liquid you consume. Daily Health News reports on the findings.
Beer reduced kidney stone risk by 41%.
White wine reduced risk by 33%.
Red wine reduced risk by 31%.
Caffeinated coffee reduced kidney stone risk by 26%.
Decaf coffee reduced risk by 16%.
Orange juice reduced risk by 12%.
Tea reduced risk by 11%.
Not only beer, but apparently my fondness for caffeinated coffee may prove to be a good thing in the long run. Another interesting finding in the report is that diet colas did not appear to increase the risk, although diet non-colas and sugar-sweetened colas did.

The researchers theorize that the diuretic effect of caffeinated and alcoholic beverages is a contributing factor in their benefits. So perhaps the healthful conclusion is to not fret about those frequent beer-induced bathroom breaks.

Hold My Beer

There's an old adage that the scariest phrase you can hear a drunk say is "Hold my beer." It's usually followed by "Watch this." But a Serbian tourist in Egypt has taken the phrase, or warning, to a whole new level.
"Dragan climbed on the jumping board, told me to hold his beer and simply ran to jump. There was no time for me to react or to try to stop him, he just went for it"..."Dragan jumped high and plunged down to the sea, but didn't make as much splash as we thought he would"...
The reason could be because Dragan Stevic ended up jumping straight on the shark which was lurking near the beach, probably looking for its next victim. Dragan had nailed it right in the head, killing it instantly. The Egyptian police found the shark washed out on the beach that morning.
At the moment, the fearless hero is in a hospital recovering from alcohol poisoning. After Dragan gets well, he will get a chance to have some more drinks as the resort had awarded the Serb tourist with a free vacation for his heroic deed.

The shark had already killed one person and injured four others. From my reading of the story, the fearless drunk is probably an accidental hero, not realizing the shark was there. But I wonder if he'll be purchasing any lottery tickets in the future.

Quote of the Day: Life

"Oh, if only life could be nothing more than looking at guns and gear all day followed by drinking and talking with friends all night? Real life can be such a pain."
Amen Brother!
