A Lizard, a Legend, and Saint Gabriel Possenti

Today, February 27, is the Feast Day of St. Gabriel Possenti, also known as St. Gabriel of Our Lady of Sorrows.

Gabriel Possenti was a Catholic seminarian in Isola del Gran Sasso, Italy. According to tradition, in 1860 Gabriel used his marksmanship to save the town from a band of marauding soldiers. As the story goes, he seized revolvers from two soldiers and boldly confronted the intruders. When the soldiers mocked the seminarian, he silenced them by taking aim and shooting a lizard scurrying across the road with remarkable accuracy. Impressed — and perhaps intimidated — the marauders left the town peacefully, escorted by the seminarian who had become an unlikely hero.

Like many saints, the line between historical fact and legend in Gabriel’s story can be difficult to discern. However, this tale of courage and skill has earned him the unofficial title of Patron Saint of Handgunners. The St. Gabriel Possenti Society was even founded to promote his legacy and to advocate for the moral and theological principles underlying self-defense. Unfortunately, the society became inactive following the death of its founder in 2017.

Many years ago, our parish was blessed with a relic of St. Gabriel Possenti under his title, St. Gabriel of Our Lady of Sorrows. I vividly remember the excitement of seeing the announcement in the weekly bulletin. When our new church was completed a few years ago, a relic of St. Gabriel was among several placed in the altar — a lasting reminder of his presence and intercession.

The intercession of St. Gabriel Possenti is needed today, especially in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Content to ignore the Bill of Rights, as well as numerous decisions from both state and federal courts, Virginia’s leftist leadership is hard at work to strip Second Amendment rights from law-abiding citizens. The history of socialism and communism is rife with governments that first stripped away gun ownership before attacking and limiting other freedoms. Our current governor and legislature seem determined to imitate the oppressors of the past.

St. Gabriel Possenti’s life and legend inspire us to stand firmly in defense of what is right and just, trusting in the guidance of God. Whether we see him as a hero of faith, a protector of the innocent, or both, his story resonates with the courage needed to face the challenges of our own times.

The Feast of Saint Gabriel Possenti

Today, February 27, is the Feast Day of St. Gabriel Possenti.

Legend holds that Gabriel Possenti was a Catholic seminarian in Isola del Gran Sasso, Italy. In 1860 he is said to have used his skills with the pistol to drive off a band of marauding soldiers who were terrorizing the town. Possenti faced the troublemakers after grabbing revolvers from two soldiers. As they laughed at the young student, he took aim and accurately shot a lizard that was running across the road. Impressed, the soldiers left the town, escorted by the seminarian, who had become the hero of the town.

Like many Saints, there's an unclear line between the facts of the Saint's life and the tradition associated with him. However, this story about Gabriel Possenti has led to him being promoted as the Patron Saint of Handgunners. The St. Gabriel Possenti Society was created for the purpose of promoting the Saint's cause. The society promoted the study of the historical, philosophical and theological bases for the doctrine of self-defense. Sadly, the founder of the group died in 2017 and it appears the organization is no longer active.

A few years ago, our parish was presented with a relic of St. Gabriel Possenti, under the title St. Gabriel of Our Lady of Sorrows. It was an exciting moment when I saw the blurb announcing the displayed relic in our weekly bulletin. Since then, I've enjoyed sharing the story of Gabriel Possenti with many parishioners. I dare say most of our Catholic friends who also enjoy the shooting sports are now familiar with the Saint and his story.

In another interesting "coincidence," my Virginia Concealed Handgun permit was originally issued on February 27, the Feast Day of the Patron Saint of Handgunners!

St. Gabriel Possenti ora pro nobis!

Today would be a great day to hit the range. If that's not possible, perhaps I'll buy some extra ammo instead, if I can find any for sale at a reasonable price.

Cheers!

Gabriel Possenti Society Founder Dies

I was saddened to hear that Second Amendment activist John Snyder passed away on October 22nd. In addition to his work on defending the right to self defense, Mr. Snyder was also the founder of the Gabriel Possenti Society and the author of The Gun Saint book. The Gabriel Possenti Society is dedicated to promoting St. Gabriel Possenti as the Patron Saint of Handgunners.

Snyder's organization was the impetus behind our informal organization of local shooters we called the Gabriel Possenti Shooters. In an email conversation with John Snyder, he was supportive and happy to hear about our local efforts to promote the Saint. (The blogging related to those activities has moved to these Musings of late.) Personally, our family has even more ties to St. Possenti as our Church has a relic of the Saint. We also received our original Virginia CHPs on his Feast Day, February 27. Sadly, improper renewal processing on the part of our county lost that date on subsequent renewals.

John Snyder was an ardent promotor of his Catholic faith as well as the Constitution. May be rest in peace.

Gun Saint Group Lauds Jesuit Scholars on Islam

The Gabriel Possenti Society has issued a statement in support of some Jesuit scholars who have been brave enough to speak the truth regarding the nature of islam. These individuals buck the trend of political correctness in order to warn of the dangers to Christians posed by these barbaric teachings.
"The St. Gabriel Possenti Society on the Solemnity of Corpus Christi commends individual Jesuit scholars throughout the world for telling it like it is about the intrinsic murderous nature of Islam," Society chairman John M. Snyder said here today.

"These courageous, individual priests of the Society of Jesus are NOT saying that all Muslims are murderers," Snyder stipulated.  "They are noting that the foundational documents of Islam, such as the Koran, approve of and even recommend the murder of non-Muslims in the promulgation of Islam.

"These Jesuits are rendering a tremendous service to civilized humanity.  Many religious, media, entertainment and political personalities have been advancing the idea that jihadist violence, including brutal throat-slashing decapitations, somehow is an aberration of Islam.  It's not.  It's part and parcel of Mohammedanism."
As faithful Catholics, we've often witnessed a corruption of the faith touted by modern Jesuits. Political correctness, under the guise of "social justice" is a common theme among the order and many Catholics are subsequently misled. It's refreshing that some members of the order still learn and teach the truth. As Snyder notes, "We appreciate deeply the courage of Jesuits who are standing up for the truth in this matter, despite the politically correct but pathetic and impotent stances of some Jesuit superiors and even the Pope."

See "Possenti Society Lauds Jesuit Exposure of Islamist Murder Truth" for the complete statement.

Gabriel Possenti Shooters Range Trip

In what is now a holiday tradition, a bunch of us gathered at the range for the 2nd Annual St. Gabriel Possenti Shooters "Day After Christmas" celebration. The informal and wholly unorganized group of Catholic shooters paid homage to the Patron Saint of Handgunners by spending the morning enjoying talking about guns, politics, and of course, shooting.

I was especially looking forward to the event, as my son was coming along for the second weekend in a row, and so was Colleen. Plus I was trying a new gun that Santa dropped off! The day was unseasonably warm but wet, with a light mist in the air all morning. Our family arrived early and staked a claim on the pistol bay, setting up our target stands and loading magazines as we waited for the others to arrive. There were eight of us total, which made for lot of smoke and noise generation.

We had a variety of targets and guns to shoot. Everyone was very conscientious of safety and aware of other shooters. Besides all the paper targets, several of us brought shotgun clays which were placed on the berm as reactive targets. They were fun replacements for the now banned steel targets.

After a couple hours of shooting some folks headed for home, while four of us moved over to another range to shoot rifles for a bit. By this time the mist had progressed to a light rain, so we didn't stay long. Our timing was perfect though, as the rain started in force as we drove away from the range.

It was an exceptionally fun morning spent with good friends. We put many rounds down range, and enjoyed a lot of conversation and laughter. There's no small amount of mud to be cleaned out of the car, and time to be spent cleaning guns afterwards, but that's a small price to pay for good times with friends and family.

Feast of St. Gabriel Possenti

Today we celebrate the Feast Day of the Patron Saint of Handgunners, St. Gabriel Possenti. We have a fondness for the Saint around here, and have even organized the occasional range trip in his honor. Our "sister blog" Gabriel Possenti Shooters, is devoted to building fellowship among Catholic shooting enthusiasts and to promote awareness among the faithful of the natural right self defense.

Today would be a good day to hit the range. Here's hoping...

See this post from February 27, 2013 for more on our affinity for this Saint.

The Day After Christmas, At the Range

A good time was had by all...
Sitting around Christmas evening, I got an email from a friend who was arranging a trip to the range for Friday morning. He had included a few fellow parishioners from our church as well. The temperature was expected to be in the unseasonable 50's the next day, making the range trip all the more attractive.

Shooter's Prayer

Last week, on the Feast of St. Gabriel Possenti, I received the graphic below from Miguel over at Gun Free Zone. We had just returned from a long afternoon spent on the range in honor of the Patron Saint of Handgunners, and I found the message especially inspiring.

This provoking illustration is based on a prayer I coined a few years ago. Not only I was thrilled to see the prayer mentioned recently at both Gun Free Zone and Fill Yer Hands, but it's great to see more recognition of St. Gabriel Possenti as well.

Range Time for a Saint

On the Feast of St. Gabriel Possenti, we planned a pilgrimage of sorts to the range. Despite the warm temperatures earlier in the week, Thursday turned out to be quite chilly. That doesn't stop us!  We started out on the rifle range, and despite having to re-stand up the target holders numerous times due to the wind, got in some good work with the AR's. One of the purposes of this trip was to try out the spotting scope I recently bought to do away with those 100 yard walks to check the targets. (It never ceases to amaze me how much "peripheral" equipment this sport calls for.)

We later moved over to one of the pistol bays for some closeup workouts. Precision shooting was the order of the day, as Checkered Flag set the challenge of shooting out the staples that were holding the targets on the cardboard! Our old friend "Buddy" made an appearance as well, although some may find him offensive. My EDC weapon got a good workout as well, along with some practice in drawing from under winter clothing.

It was a fun way to mark the feast day of the Patron Saint of Handgunners. Eventually, the cold temps and windchill convinced us it was time to head home for some warming beverages. There was A LOT of brass to be picked up, which got even more challenging as the daylight waned, and fingers numbed. But soon enough we were standing around the kitchen counter enjoying a variety of good beer and reminiscing about the fun day.

Fr. Z also has a nice post promoting the Patron Saint of Handgunners.

BTW, the St. Gabriel Possenti pin shown in Colleen's photo above is available here.

When some local Catholics were looking for a name for a blog devoted to Catholicism and self defense, we were naturally drawn to honor the Saint by creating Gabriel Possenti Shooters. I dare say most of our Catholic friends who also enjoy shooting are familiar with the Saint and his story.

Recently, I was looking at my Virginia Concealed Handgun Permit when I was struck by the anniversary date printed on the permit — February 27. Wow, my permit was issued on the Feast Day of the Patron Saint of Handgunners! That's some "coincidence." It would appear the Saint has been watching out for me longer than I have been aware of him.

A Legitimate Right to Self Defense

A post over on Gabriel Possenti Shooters addresses the dual issues of the right to defend oneself and the importance of protecting our individual freedoms, from both the religious and secular viewpoints.
Self-defense and the Second Amendment; there has been a lot of talk about these subjects recently. After the horrific murder of the school children, politicians and media celebrities have aggressively dominated the world of communication with calls to curtail the individual's right to self defense, a God-given right, by taking away our liberty.
Rather than overreact with emotional "quick fixes" of more legislation stripping us of our freedom (which has not proven to be effective with the current slate of laws already covering gun ownership) a few orderly thoughts as to what is True and how to best proceed are in order. There are two parts to consider: the right to defend oneself and the importance of protecting our individual freedoms. They go hand in hand.

Go read the whole thing.

It's Called Responsibility

"The decision to not carry a firearm is a conscience decision to pass the responsibility for your own safety on to someone else."

I posted an editorial entitled "You Are Responsible For You" over on the Gabriel Possenti Shooters blog. Read it here.
